FINALLY! A PRESIDENT WHO CAN DANCE!
As evidenced from his entrance when a guest on “The Ellen DeGeneres” show (see YouTube), Barack can move. This is a good thing! Let’s use the momentum to find dance in new places, put movement back in everyday life. No more last place mentality for dance-among-the-arts: we are here, now and moving!
And regardless of your politics, this President-elect heralds a new way of thinking as a politician, in a political system. Let it be a change for you in the way you talk about your art, your daily practice of dance. Make change while the time is ripe!
Some great things are shaking as we turn Fall into Winter: We have finished two of the three summits Dance/MetroDC decided to host this fall, with “DancerCitizen!” and “ArtistCitizen!” yielding great chats and great interaction. The first meeting seemed a declaration, re-dedicating of purpose for those involved, with forthcoming notes I will share with the community at our third summit, “PartyCitizen!” on December 11th. The second meeting’s subject matter was about collaboration, and we had great representatives from the visual arts, music, theatre worlds to join us to talk about qualities of working together and sum up our philosophical wants and needs when making the best collaborative efforts. Notes on that meeting at “PartyCitizen”, too! An enticement to join us that night – we will have a good time and announce more plans for the remaining Winter months events and Spring’s Dance Is the Answer Campaign.
Speaking of Dance is the Answer – April 23 – May 4, 2009, be on the look out for new performance opportunities – festivals of dance of all kinds happening in DC, VA, and MD and more dance in out of the way places- galleries, on the Mall, in backyards, on the metro. And of course free classes, open rehearsals and the events that have made previous Dance is the Answer activities such a successful way to reach new and existing audiences and participants.
Be sure to check out the Submissions and Opportunities sections of the website- the Kennedy Center’s Commissioning Project is calling for applications, as is CityDance for another commissioning opportunity.
Take a deep look at the website- it's going to change in the New Year, as will our e-newsletters...change, change, change!!!
And, as always, stay in touch
Best,
